Label 13. Norman tile. From the Abbaye of St Etienne at Caen. Presented to the Society of Antiquities by John Henniker Major 1788. Duplicate tracing by Renaud I 104. Mr Heniker thought the arms on this tile belonged to the family of Gorges, which in Normandy, bore on a shield gules, six lozenges azure, but as the Lords de Riviers in Normandy likewise bore azure, six lozenges gules, be left the ownership undecided. In the rolls of Charles and of Nicholas. Sir Johan de Rivers bears gules six mascles or, whilst in Nicholas's roll Sir Rauf de Gorge bore azure six mascles or. These changes of tincture in both shield and charge represent differences only whilst the label of four points has a large relative significance seeing that it did not operate to denote cadency until early in the 13th century. vide Boutell's Heraldry p 235.
