Other details: Label on back (4). Norman tile. Arms of Mallet de Graville. From the Abbaye St Etienne at Caen. Presented to Society of Antiquaries by John Henniker Major AD 1788. Thickness 300 mm. See duplicate tracing from Renaud I 100. Mallet de Graville. In Charles's Roll of arms temp Henry III and Edward I the arms of Robert Malet are given as argent three buckles sable. Papworth quoting from a roll amongst the Harley M.S. c.AD 1277 renders this coat as argent. Three round buckles tongues to the dexter sable. In the roll published by Nicholas Harris Nicholas temp Edward II the colours are changed and a chevron added for Sir Robert Malet. Thus `de sable a un chevron, iij fermals de argent'
