This edging half tile bearing on its surface in relief Lozengy Ermine. Like the Castle Acre and Thetford ones both of which are yellow glazed same size, same ordinaries plus a chevron charged with martlets (208, 123). They are all associated with the Eastern counties and the present specimen will represent a family precedence seeing that it has no mark of decadence as shown by a chevron super-imposed on the tiles from Thetford and from Castle Acre Priories. The juxta position imposed on the tiles from Thetford with Royal Arms of England points apparently to a family of destruction which may have been that of Fitzwilliam of Charnworth in Lincolnshire, viz lozengy, ermine and gules, though the same ordinary are given for Telford viz Lozengy. Ermine and Azure (vide Papworth). The tile is possessed by Mr Richards of Nottingham and was purchased by him at the sale of a collection of local antiquities at Spalding.
