Nos 53, 54. These are from Hailes Abbey, the foundation of Richard, Earl of Cornwall, and King of the Romans (brother to Henry III, King of England) whose double headed eagle, the ensign of the latter dignity, is represented in the second tile (54). Both patterns are demidiated and counter-changed, which has an excellent effect. The originals of these specimens were given to the editor by the Right Hon Lord Ellenborough, some years ago, at the time his Lordship was laying down a large number of the tiles from Hailes Abbey at his mansion Southam House, near Cheltenham.
